How many questions are on the Ontario Class A knowledge test?
The Ministry of Transportation and DriveTest do not publish a question count for the Class A knowledge test on their official pages — any site stating an exact number is guessing. DriveTest says knowledge tests have two or three sections and typically take 20 to 30 minutes. Study the whole Official MTO Truck Handbook rather than a fixed number of questions.
What score do I need to pass the Ontario Class A knowledge test?
At least 80%. DriveTest states that you must earn a total score of at least 80% to pass a knowledge test. Tests are marked on the spot, and results are valid for one year.
Is the Ontario Class A knowledge test timed?
No. DriveTest knowledge tests are not timed — you can take the time you need until the office closes. DriveTest says a knowledge test typically takes 20 to 30 minutes, no appointment is needed, and you should arrive at least one hour before the office closes.
How long is mandatory entry-level training (MELT) for a Class A licence?
At least 103.5 hours of instruction from an approved training provider recognized by the province. It must be completed before the Class A road test, and once completed it is valid for life. Providers set their own prices — ask the provider for its current cost.
Do I need MELT before the knowledge test?
No — Ontario requires mandatory entry-level training to be completed before attempting the Class A road test. The knowledge test is based on the Official MTO Truck Handbook and is administered by DriveTest.
What vehicles does an Ontario AZ licence cover?
A full Class AZ licence lets you drive any truck/tractor-trailer combination, a motor vehicle towing vehicles over a total gross weight of 4,600 kg with air brakes, and a vehicle pulling double trailers. It also covers Class D heavy trucks and Class G vehicles. It does not let you drive a bus carrying passengers, a motorcycle or a moped.
What is the Z air-brake endorsement?
The Z endorsement is Ontario's air-brake endorsement: you need it to drive a vehicle with an air brake or air-over-hydraulic brake system. You can earn it through an air brake endorsement course (then take the referral envelope to a DriveTest centre within 6 months) or by passing the air brake knowledge test and a practical test at a DriveTest centre.
Who is eligible for a full Class A licence in Ontario?
You must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid Ontario licence other than G1, G2, M, M1 or M2, pass a vision test, submit a valid medical report, pass the knowledge test, complete mandatory entry-level training, and pass a road test in a vehicle that meets the full Class A requirements. From January 1, 2027, road-test drivers must also have held a Class G or higher licence for at least 6 months.
Where do I take the AZ tests, and what does DriveTest do?
DriveTest administers Ontario's driver examinations at DriveTest centres: you apply there, take the knowledge test there (no appointment needed), and book your road test through DriveTest. The tests themselves are created by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). Cancel a road test at least 48 hours ahead to avoid a cancellation fee.
What vehicle do I need for the full Class A road test?
A trailer with a Manufacturer's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of at least 4,600 kg, a full air brake system on both the truck/tractor and the trailer, and a manual transmission with at least eight forward gears and a high-low range. Testing in an automatic gives you a manual-transmission restriction, and a vehicle that does not meet the full requirements leads to a restricted Class A licence.
How much does it cost to get an AZ licence in Ontario?
Ontario and DriveTest publish the current licence and test fees on their official fee lists, and training providers set their own training prices — so rather than print a figure that could go stale, check the fee list linked from Ontario's official truck-licence page and ask approved providers for current prices before you budget.
